MIRAMICHI, NB – Sally Ann (née Fleming) Creaghan, wife of the late Dr. Mark Creaghan of Miramichi, New Brunswick, passed away peacefully on August 20, 1999. She is survived by her daughter, Alexandra (Lexie) Creaghan Sage of Mississauga, Ontario; her son-in-law Scott Sage and two beloved grandsons, Scott and Reid Sage. She was predeceased by her husband Dr. Mark Creaghan in 1997 and by her son Gordon in 1979.
Born in Toronto, July 29, 1930, she was the only daughter of John Gordon Fleming and Florence Alexandra (Davy) Fleming. She attended Jarvis Collegiate and Victoria College, University of Toronto. For many years she owned and operated the Fleming Press Ltd. in Toronto. After marriage, she and her husband resided in Miami, Florida, Mattawa, Ontario, where daughter Lexie was born, Rochester, New York, where son Gordon was born and London and Ottawa, Ontario, finally to settle permanently in Newcastle, New Brunswick, where she continued to raise her family and was a wonderful and devoted mother.
Sally was known as a great sport with a fun sense of humor and was much loved by people dear to her. She was an avid outdoorswoman and lover of nature. In early years she enjoyed salmon and trout fishing, hunting and canoeing. She was an excellent sailor, having earned her Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons Certificate, and with her husband, sailed throughout the Maritimes and the Caribbean, and participated in many Northumberland Strait yacht races.
She spent a lifetime loving flowers and creating magic in her gardens. A rock hound since childhood, the past two decades saw her enthusiastically searching out and collecting rocks, minerals and amethysts from the geologically rich Bay of Fundy coastline in Nova Scotia. Her love of travelling to tropical shores, and her great love of the ocean, she was also an avid seashell collector. She had a reverence for the forests and for natural beauty, and found solace and joy in nature.
She leaves behind dear and beloved friends and relations in New Brunswick, Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, Ireland, Florida, California and South Africa.
She leaves behind also her special friend and caregiver, Elmer Walsh of Whitney, NB, who during her months of illness, filled her hours with love, affection and happiness, and who went above and beyond the call of duty to care for her with utter devotion.
Her ashes will be buried with her husband and son at Burnt Church Community Cemetery and with her mother and father at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto.
Contributions, in Sally Creaghan’s memory, to the Miramichi River Environmental Assessment Committee would be greatly appreciated and would play a part in keeping the magnificent Miramichi River healthy and beautiful for future generations.
A memorial service will be held at Davidson’s Funeral Home, Miramichi, on Saturday, August 28, 1999 at 11:00 AM.
