John D. Creaghan
Former Newcastle Mayor John David Creaghan died at the Miramichi Hospital on Saturday at the age of 71. He was the son of the late Donald Creaghan and Rita Buckley and attended St. Mary s Roman Catholic Church, Newcastle.
He was vice-president of J.D. Creaghan Co. and managed the company’s clothing store in Chatham for many years. He served overseas with the Canadian Army in the Second World War, and attended St. Thomas College, Chatham and St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish, N.S.
He served two terms as Mayor of Newcastle, in the 1950s and 1980s, and served many years on Town Council. He was a life member of the Rotary Club of Chatham, which presented him the Paul Harris Fellowship Award in 1990. He was a member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Bishop Hall Assembly, and a charter member of the Miramichi Irish Society.
He is survived by his wife, Marion (Johnson) Creaghan; two brothers, Dr. Mark Creaghan of Nordin, and Thomas Creaghan of Toronto; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. A sister, Nora and two brothers, Richard and Alan, died earlier.
The funeral will be held at 11:00 AM St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Newcastle. Interment will follow cremation.
