Maureen Hazen (1922–2014)

Passed away peacefully at the Montfort extended care facility on Friday, March 21, 2014. Born Maureen Evelyn Nash in Ottawa, daughter of Roger Nash and Evelyn Hicks; Maureen schooled at the Rideau Convent and was introduced to skiing and canoeing by her step-brother Gordon Clarke.

In 1945, she married John D. Hazen and embraced her new career as an army officer’s wife with postings in Petawawa, London Ont., Germany, Halifax, and Whitehorse, eventually returning to Ottawa. Although tempted by sunnier climates she loved her home in the Ottawa/Gatineau area and the change of seasons. She was also a devotee of the NAC and had a passion for Opera. Predeceased by her husband John D. Hazen in 1992 and her son John Hazen in 2010; she is survived by her son Jim Hazen and wife Slava Klobucar, granddaughter Lisa Atkinson, grandsons Jason Pitre, Sascha Hazen-Pouliot, and Richard Hazen and recently her great-granddaughter Lily Atkinson.

Special thanks goes to the Brunet family who have supported and comforted her during her illness. Friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse & Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street (at O’Connor) Friday, March 28 from 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial Service will be held in the Chapel on Saturday, March 29 at 10 a.m., followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind or to the Alzheimer Society.
