Marion Friel

The death of Mrs. Marion Friel (née Marion Aileen Creaghan), a granddaughter of the founder of Creaghan’s department stores and the wife of Moncton’s senior Crown prosecutor, Donal Friel QC, occurred early this morning at Moncton Hospital following a lengthy illness. She was 58.

Born in Newcastle, she was a daughter of J.A. Creaghan, a well-known New Brunswick lawyer who died several years ago, and the former Alice Marven, still living. She was a granddaughter of the late John D. Creaghan, founder of the J.D. Creaghan Company Ltd. She was president of Beaver Curling Club’s Ladies’ Association in 1970 and 1971, was active in blood donor clinics in the city and served with the Red Cross Auxiliary during the Second World War.

She is survived by her husband, Donal Friel QC; four daughters: Mrs. Barry Taylor (Margery) of Toronto, Ont., Mrs. Frank McKenna (Julie) of Chatham, Mrs. Michael Scott (Priscilla) of Orangeville, Ont., and Mrs. Ross Petrie (Aileen) of Murray River P.E.I.; two sons: John, who practices law in Grand Falls, N.B., Patrick, a student at Memorial University’s Medical School in St. John’s, Nfld.; two sisters: Mrs. Anthony Rock (Clare), New York State, Mrs. Jules Picot (Carol) of Fredericton; three brothers: Judge W.L.M. Creaghan, a county court judge in Fredericton, Donald A. Creaghan, president of J.D. Creaghan Ltd., Riverview, Marven Creaghan, vice-president of J.D. Creaghan, Newcastle; seven grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

The body is resting at Cadman’s Funeral Home, with funeral service to be held at Cap-Pelé Roman Catholic Church at a time and day to be announced. Interment will be in Cap-Pelé.
