Ellen Gertrude Creaghan (née Adams)

One of the greatest factors behind J.D. Creaghan’s success in life and in business was his marriage to Ellen Gertrude Adams (1856–1935). She was the daughter of Samuel Adams and Mary Ann Daley of Douglastown and sister of: Canadian Senator Michael Adams, Colorado Senator Samuel Adams and US Congressman John Adams. Grandson John McManus, who lived with his grandparents after his mother died, said that Ellen often admonished J.D. by saying, “Why can’t you be successful like my brothers?”

According to the Dictionary of Miramichi Biography, Ellen G. Creaghan was, a member of all of the charitable societies in Newcastle and leader of most of them. The book also says she was one of the most admired women on the Miramichi and that she, always appeared to be young in manner and thought.
